Santa Cruz

Versión española

Photo 1: A "picture postcard" view of the Barrio Nuevo district of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The place looked even worse before the Tenerife government got most of the people to paint their wretched dwellings. Before the campaign, the hillside was covered with grey breeze blocks. Believe it or not, what you see in the picture is actually an improvement!
Buildings from the Barranco de Santos neighbourhood can just be seen at the bottom of the photo.

Photo 2: Swinging to the right, we can see a building that was just out of frame in the previous photo. It is Febles Campos, a public psychiatric hospital - a good place to put the local politicians who allow districts like Barrio Nuevo to sprout up all over Tenerife.

Photo 3: Swinging to the left, we get this splendid view of the Barrio de la Salud neighbourhood on the other side of the ravine, and of a jumble of crude dwellings along the left side of the stream. The scene is more like the worst of Turkey than the "paradise" peddled in the tourist brochures.

Photo 5: On this side, there are still bits of hillside that have yet to be covered in breeze blocks and concrete.

Photo 6: Another view of the same district.

Photo 7: The views from above Barrio Nuevo are also pretty depressing: Barrio de la Salud, the municipal nurseries, and the ravine.
